TOUCHING THE
LIVES OF ISRAELIS

Strengthening KBY congregations makes progressive Judaism more accessible to the vast majority of Israelis who yearn for an alternative to the orthodox approach to Judaism.

STRENGTHENING
THE JEWISH STATE

Contributing to KBY makes a positive statement to Israel about the value, validity and authenticity of progressive Judaism by strengthening and empowering the 50+ Reform and Conservative kehillot in Israel.

A beautiful poem:
What is a Congregation?

Sderot "Street Cinematheque" Event

The program grew from a single conversation with the Sderot Youth Department.  We proposed showing films outside in parks throughout the city.  [This was possible because of the ceasfire now in place.]

We soon learned that the Youth Department had a similar, but smaller, program already for July.  Together, we quickly agreed to extend and greatly expand the program for August.  The "Street Cinematheque" event will screen one movie three times a week in the local parks, for children and youth; and another movie once a week at the Cinematheque plaza for adults and young adults.

Prince Bride Love in the Time of Cholera

Film Festival Barekas (Assorted Israeli Short Films)

[ Naturally, all movies are dubbed or have Hebrew sub-titles ]

The Sderot "Street Cinematheque" program starts on Monday, Aug. 8th with a screening of the film "Kite Runner" at the Sderot Cinematheque plaza.

This program was developed with the help and support of:
Sderot Youth Department
Sderot Cinematheque
Sderot Community Center
Youth Leadership Council
Congregation Magen Avraham (Omer)

KBY extends it's thanks to these organizations and to our contributors.  What we've accomplished is amazing!

Additional benefits:

*** 1) Rather than renting equipment for 12 screening; it was cheaper to buy the equipment -- a projector, sound system and an outdoor screen (which was "homemade.")  We didn't anticipate the demand for the equipment in the community (which of course will continue to be useful long after this program.)

The Youth Council used it for the balance of their July outdoor film program; the brand new Community Center borrowed our projector for a film they screened in the main auditorium; the Youth Council's White Nights program (Thurs. night program for teenagers) used the equipment for karaoke and films.

*** 2) The Sderot Cinematheque has a very special cafe on the premises.  It's run by the ELEM organization, which provides services for youth in distress in Israel.  We've arranged for them to provide refreshments for films at the Cinematheque plaza and for their staff to help us.

*** 3) We hired a Sapir College (Sderot) student to help with project.  As part of his college program, he produced a short film (2 1/2 mins.) about the situation in Sderot.  We asked him to covert the format and post the film on YouTube.  We hope to have it posted on this page next week.
