Kehilat Moreshet Avraham (KMA) is one of the flagship congregations of the Masorti (Conservative) Movement in Israel. Located in southeastern Jerusalem near Jerusalem’s magnificent Tayellet (promenade), its name, "Abraham’s Heritage," remainds us that this was the area from which our ancestor Abraham, first saw "from afar" the holy Mount Moriah. KMA strives to be a truly pluralistic and inclusive community, providing religious services and education in the spirit of Masorti/Conservative Judaism. You can be our partner in this important endeavor.

Our History
Founded by a handful of families in the mid-1970s in order to enhance the quality of religious life for Conservative/Masorti Jews, KMA has grown to be the anchor for Conservative Judaism in South Jerusalem. We have regular services on Shabbat and holidays, educational and community activities, social and cultural events, and an outstanding Masorti kindergarten. Our award-winning Bayit Cham, program, offering tutoring, a hot meal, and interaction with our own children (and adults), began with Ethiopian children and has now been expanded to include children from disadvantaged families.

Our Challenges and Mission
The past two years have been particularly challenging for KMA. We have wrestled with the issue of women’s roles in our services. Rather than choosing to view ourselves as either "Egalitarian" or "Traditional," KMA has chosen to identify itself as a beacon of pluralism and inclusiveness. We believe we have created an atmosphere which conforms to the pluralistic nature of Conservative Judaism.
Along with Israelis, we have confronted terror, bloodshed, and economic hardship in the matsav (situation), which affects all aspects of our lives. With your help we will make KMA an attractive place for our children to spend their leisure time, encouraging them to "hang out" at shul. The recent donation of a ping-pong table and a home entertainment center has further enhanced the KMA Youth Lounge. Because of your rapid response to our new security needs, we now have an armed guard on duty. We need to redouble our efforts on all fronts.

Additional Highlights

 ã  Rav Barry was appointed to be the Chairperson of the Steering Committee in charge of a joint Reform-Conservative program to promote social action programs in Israeli Masorti and Reform Synagogues.

ã Former Director of the Israeli Mossad, Efraim Halevi is scheduled to lecture at KMA in early May, 2005.

ã The participants of the Women's League for Conservative Judaism Leadership Mission and the 6th Grade class from the local East Talpiot "Tali" School davened together, Sunday morning January 30, 2005. Rav Barry led the Davening and explained the different parts of the service in both English and Hebrew.

ã Yalta, the Association of Women Rabbis and Women Rabbinical Students is planning on conducting its regional Model Seder for Women at KMA.

ã Christian Students from the Jerusalem University College visited the Synagogue together with their Jewish Studies instructor KMA congregant Rabbi Moshe Silberschein. Rabbi Silberschein taught in the Sanctuary about the Synagogue, the Jewish Liturgy, the Torah reading and about Talit & Tfillin.

ã KMA thanks Sherrie and Al Rose of Chicago and the Yeladim B'yachad Foundation for donating the wonderful outdoor recreational equipment for our Ganim (Kindergarten classes.)

Our congregation now numbers about 110 families. Although founded by olim from North America, KMA now includes members from numerous countries, as well as many native Israelis who have found a spiritual home here. With you help, Congregation Moreshet Avraham will be the cornerstone of Conservative Judaism in Jerusalem.

Highlights
ã  KMA Ganim , Kindergarten Classes held their annual "Havdala Get Together" on Motzaei Shabbat (Sat, Feb 19, 2005). All 42 children accompanied by parents, siblings and some grandparents, attended.  The children sang and danced, bidding farewell to the Malkat HaShabbat (the Sabbath Queen) who promised to return the following Friday night.

ã  Haaretz Journalist Yair Sheleg gave a lecture about "The Disengagement and its effect on the Settlers and the Settler's Movement."

ã Soldiers from the Sarel (Volunteers for Israel Program) Unit held a seminar on religious pluralism in Kehilat Moreshet Avraham. Orthodox Rav Steve Klitzner, Reform Rabbi Levi Weiman Kelman and Conservative Rav Barry appeared before the soldiers and explained the principles of each religious stream
