Upcoming Event...

Pizmon, the Jewish a cappella group from Columbia University, Barnard College and the Jewish Theological Seminary is coming to Ashkelon on March 14th - 17th. They will be holding a concert on March 15th for our membership and on the 16th a special concert for residents of Sderot and Olim. (Click here for more information...)

Help Sderot & Ashkelon...

Do a double mitzvah by helping Sderot and Ashkelon.  Our kehilla is starting a new project to help the residents of Sderot. We are going to order our challot and baked goods every week from a bakery in Sderot. The shops are going bankrupt since there aren’t enough people buying their goods in Sderot.  The bakery needs orders to stay alive and keep people employed.

Buy donating $36 you can buy 2 cakes and ˝ kilo of Rugelach which will be donated to the Kehillah in Ashkelon for a Kiddush or a special event. This will help support Sderot and the Kehillah in Ashkelon at the same time.

This years news
Rabbi Gustavo Suraszki who emigrated from Argentina is now starting his third year as our Rabbi of our Kehillah. Rabbi Suraszki has two daughters named Mayaan & Adi and his wife’s name is Karina. Kehillat Netzach Israel is one of the more established Conservative Congregations in Israel having just celebrated its 41st anniversary.

Netzach Israel is an Egalitarian Congregation
Women are counted for minyan, can be Schlichot Tzibur, can read Torah or have an Aliyah.  This is a major change that has come about gradually over a course of several years.  We have a group of women who learned to read Torah and do so on a regular basis, as well as a group that are learning to be Schlichot Tzibur.

 “Recent” updates

Noam Youth Movement was active this year with many different activities including giving out honey, drinks and cakes to Soldiers at the central bus station for Rosh Hashana. Many children attended the Ramah/Noam sleepaway camp and attended Shabbatonim and trips during the year. Our three week Summer Day Camp held in our Kehilah had over 130 campers including many children from Sderot and the surrounding Kibbutzim. The children from Sderot and the surrounding areas received full scholarships to attend the camp.

We have this year 175 children in five classrooms attending the Tali Kindergartens from 8 - 1:20. 130 children stay in our afternoon education program from 1:20 - 4:30 in five classrooms age 3 to 6.  They receive a hot lunch and a free snack everyday. Special activities are arranged for them. Scholarships are also needed to help family in need to attend the afternoon day care center.

In November 2005 a joint program was begun through the Associated of Baltimore in cooperation with Yahalom. It is a special Family Education program running for 10 sessions over the next few months with 30 people attending.

In December 2007 we enjoyed hosting a Bat Mitzvah from a
member of a Conservative Synagogue in Mexico. We also had a Bat Mitzvot from Baltimore and Pennyslvania in 2007.  Recently our latest Bar/Bat Mitzvah Class got under way.

Now we are going full steam ahead with our yearly Mishloach Manot Program and distributing tasty packages for Purim to the elderly, needy and soldiers. We are also planning to give Pesach food and Hagadot to those in need.  We are planning to give out 100 Mishloach Manot packages to one parent families.

So now you know about us, we invite you to visit our Kehillah and meet some of our members when you come to Israel. If your visit is on Friday morning, we welcome your participation in the Kabalat Shabbat activity that takes place in our preschool.

There are many opportunities for joint projects in our congregation as well as continuing old ones and we look forward to your support.

Southern Region's Women's Day
We hosted 160 women for the Southern Region Study Day on January 20th, 2008 in our Kehillah. The speakers included Professor Alice Shalevi and Rabbi Anat Ramon.

Annual NOAM Day Camp
During the summer, we hold our annual NOAM summer day camp for children from preschool through grade six.  Many of these children require subsidies in order to attend camp. We try to make room for everyone: needy families, new immigrants, single-parent families, etc.

"Nearly New" Bazaar
Kehillat Netzach Israel Ashkelon held a nearly new sale as part of our outreach program to help the needy. Many new Ethiopian immigrants and one-parent families came to buy bicycles, clothes, books, baby food and household goods generously donated by our members and friends.

Yahrzeit – An Everlasting Memory

We are offering an opportunity for overseas members to join the Netzach Israel Memorial Program. A plaque will be established in a name of a loved one which will be lit up during the five times a year at which time Kaddish will be recited.

This is an opportunity to perpetuate the Memory of your loved ones in Israel.

Each year a note will be sent to family reminding them of the date of Yahrzeit.

Celebrate life by making an everlasting gift to Netzach Israel.

To establish a Yahrzeit for a one time cost of $540, please contact the Kehillah at:

kehillat@zahav.net.il or 011-972-8-671-1370

Financial Situation
As you know, Masorti congregations are not funded by the government (as opposed to Orthodox congregations that receive government funding).  We receive some help from the Masorti movement.

We have many siddurim (prayer books) that are falling apart or torn. This is especially a problem for the high holy days because the mahzorim that we use are no longer in print. We can’t get a few at a time.  We need a whole new set, so that people can follow.  A $30 donation will buy one Mahzor for our Kehillah.  You can buy it in honor of a loved one.  Please just send us an email for details.

We do educational work with the young (not all members of our youth group are members of our congregation) and try to help all members of our community. Please help us to continue to serve our congregation and our community!

NOAM Youth Group

The NOAM youth group was very successful this past year. We had about 100 children from second to twelfth grades. Many children received scholarships this year to attend the Ramah/NOAM sleepaway camp, shabbatonim and trips.

On Israeli salaries, the camp experience is just very expensive (about $600 per child). We feel that this experience is so important for the children that we try to give financial assistance to any family that needs it to send them to camp.

They meet Masorti children their ages from all over the country. They see that they are not “unusual” or “strange”, even if they are a minority among their age group. They have an amazing cocktail of activities that are fun and educational, that teach Masorti Jewish values, religious experiences, Zionist experiences, helping others, and learning about themselves.

We hope that during the coming school year, as well as next summer, we will be able to enable as many of our children as possible to take part in trips and seminars and Shabbatonim sponsored by NOAM.
